Outlook From Two Sisters by Brian Carew Hopkins

Outlook from Two Sisters is a compact, vibrant exploration of the Perth hinterland, captured with the urgent, gestural energy of a single-session plein-air study. Executed during a period of personal respite at the Two Sisters guest house, the work functions as both a topographical record and a psychological "escape." The composition is anchored by a high-key palette of lemon yellows and acidic greens, representing a sun-drenched pasture that leads the eye toward a rhythmic screen of eucalyptus trees. Above, a fractured blue sky is rendered with thick, directional dabs, mirroring the texture of the scrubland below and creating a cohesive, tactile surface that prioritises the "feeling" of the light over photographic detail. The work is defined by its temporal specificity. Conceived and completed in the "4 o'clock" light of a Wednesday afternoon, the painting captures the long shadows and golden-hour luminosity characteristic of the Western Australian landscape at the threshold of evening. This specific environmental context—noted by the artist as a moment of transition—is translated into a flurry of expressionist marks. The foreground is framed by the dark, skeletal reach of a gum tree on the left and a burst of deep maroon flora in the lower right, creating a natural proscenium that directs the viewer’s gaze through a "little bit of sunlight" toward the distant forest line. While the artist’s surrounding environment includes the encroaching presence of a highway and the hum of transit, the painting itself performs a deliberate act of filtration. It focuses on the interval between the trees, seeking a stillness within the rural sprawl. This "outlook" is not a passive observation but an active engagement with the site’s materiality. The visible grain of the small board and the impasto application of oil paint suggest a brisk, intuitive response to the shifting atmosphere. The brushstrokes do not merely describe the foliage; they record the velocity of the artist’s observation as the light began to fail. Ultimately, Outlook from Two Sisters is a meditation on the restorative power of the landscape. It occupies the space between the traditional Australian landscape tradition and a more contemporary, subjective impressionism. By collapsing the distance between the artist’s immediate surroundings and the finished surface, the work becomes a vessel for the experience of "staying"—a localized, intense effort to pin down a fleeting moment of gold and green before the day surrenders to shadow. The resulting image is one of vibrant equilibrium, capturing the quietude of the hinterland as a necessary counterpoint to the world beyond the trees.
