Flight to Mt Fuji-san by David F. Heatwole

From this shifting boundary emerges a face and an outstretched hand. Resting above the hand is an origami crane, introducing another distinctly Japanese form into the composition while also connecting the natural landscape with something created through human imagination. The painting moves between different ways of seeing: landscape and abstraction, nature and constructed form, physical space and imagined space. Mount Fuji remains recognizable throughout, yet the world surrounding it appears alive with patterns, pathways, and information that ordinarily remain unseen. Flight to Mt. Fuji-San asks the viewer not simply to look at a landscape, but to consider how differently that landscape might appear if more of the energy and information moving through it could somehow become visible.
