Butterfly Affect by David F. Heatwole

A Butterfly’s Perception of Directions imagines a world experienced through a system of movement, color, orientation, and visual information different from our own. At the center of the composition, a butterfly emerges from an environment filled with elliptical forms that appear to move in multiple directions and occupy different depths. Some cluster around the butterfly while others seem to approach, recede, rotate, or pass through the surrounding space. Sweeping bands of color create additional pathways through the composition. The butterfly itself is constructed from many of the same visual elements found throughout its environment, blurring the distinction between the observer and what is being observed. The painting reflects David Heatwole\'s continuing exploration of perception, information, and point of view. Human beings naturally interpret the world through human senses, but other forms of life encounter that same world through perceptual systems profoundly different from our own. A Butterfly’s Perception of Directions asks the viewer to imagine that difference: not simply what a butterfly might see, but how direction, movement, distance, and surrounding information might constitute an entirely different experience of reality.
